The higher institute of arts and crafts in Gabes was founded by virtue of the presidential decree number 1912/2001 dated back to the 14th of August 2001, published the same day in the Republic of Tunisia's Official Journal.
On the national level, it is considered as the second institute created to teach those specialities.

Through its diverse specialities, the institute opts for a scientific, cultural, artistic and technical formation characterised by a craft and professional counselling. This orientation is based on advanced technologies conceived to enhance the student's creation capacity and let him acquire new artistic competences, which will facilitate his integration in the economic, social and cultural life of his country.

The foundation plan of the institute tries to achieve many scientific and national objectives:

The strengthening of the academic formation in the field of arts with precise and up to date programmes which develop for the student the spirit of initiative and the best use of advanced technologies.
The revision of the classic masterships specifically in the field of Plastic Arts and reinforcing them with new perspectives and additional options that would contribute to a better chance for the student and future job applicant in the job market.
The activation of the professional and functional sides in arts by offering a formation of "technician" in specific domains based on a computerised database directly related to arts and often used in crafts like advertising, product design, tapestry, interior design, techniques, and design of image and visual arts.
Developing the national legacy in the field of craft and refreshing the domain with a skilled staff able to handle new technologies used in design and innovate at the same time. Besides, the Higher Institute of Arts and Crafts of Gabes is in a permanent work to fulfil the state policy aiming at reinforcing the formation and relating it to the regional specialities.
